What Lies Beneath the Noise: Unlocking your true essence

Older couple meditating indoors

Recently, during my own personal meditation, I had one of the most incredible experiences.

Meditation isn’t always easy for me. Like many of us, my mind can be a busy place. There’s often a long list of things that need to be done. Projects I’m working on. Deadlines. Responsibilities. The quiet hum of worry about what might not get finished.

Fear, doubt, and endless to-do lists can quickly fill the mind and make it challenging to truly settle in.

But this day was different.

My husband and I have a little ritual we love. There’s a small town near us called Wylie. We like to go to a little shop there, grab a coffee and a sweet afternoon treat, and sit outside in the chairs. We talk, sip our drinks, and simply enjoy being together.

Nothing extraordinary.

Just a small moment inside what is often a busy day.

On this day, meditation was particularly important to me, because I’ve been working on something for several days now — a proposal for my S.E.L.F. Empowerment program. It’s something I feel deeply excited about… and, if I’m honest, a little nervous too.

I knew I needed to pause.

And I’m so grateful I did.

During my meditation, I was able to drop deeper than usual — past the busy thoughts, past the worry, past the endless planning. I arrived in that quiet place within the heart, unlocking my true essence.

The place where our spirit lives.

A place that is completely still. A place where there is no grasping, no concerns, no ego clinging.

Only presence. And in that moment, an image appeared.

I saw myself sitting at that little table in Wylie with my tea and a scone.

But this time… my husband wasn’t there.

As I sat in that moment, an overwhelming sadness rose within me. A sadness so deep it surprised me.

And then something beautiful happened.

I realized how deeply I love this man.

All the worries and concerns that had filled my mind just moments before had completely disappeared. In their place was something far more powerful.

Pure, simple love.

When my meditation felt complete, I walked into my husband’s office, wrapped my arms around him, and just cried in his embrace.

It was overwhelming.

And it was beautiful.

Moments like this remind me what can happen when we allow ourselves to go deep into our soul — when we let the humanness of life, with all its complexities, soften and fall away.

When that happens, we reconnect with who we truly are.

Pure and simple. Love.

When life becomes overwhelming — when the noise of our human existence gets too loud — we can begin to forget this truth. The feeling of love that lives within each of us can become buried beneath worry, busyness, and fear.

But it never actually disappears.

It’s always there.

Sometimes we simply need to pause long enough to remember.

No matter what path our human life has taken — the good, the bad, or the messy — this essence remains within us.

The Buddhists call it our Buddha nature.

But it isn’t really about religion or philosophy.

It’s about recognizing the magnificence of who we truly are.

Beneath the noise.

Beneath the worries.

Beneath the endless doing.

We are spirit.

And at our core, what lies beneath is that spirit of pure love, your true essence.

SELF Reflection

Take a moment today to pause. Close your eyes.

Take a breath.

And ask yourself:

What might I rediscover if I allowed the noise to soften — even for a few minutes?

You might be surprised by what you might unlock.
