S.E.L.F. Reflection: 250 Years: Magnificent and Messy

It's been 250 years since our country's founding. Our history is both magnificent and messy.
We find ourselves, once again, in turbulent times. Politics divides us. Conversations become arguments. Basic human values seem open for debate.
But this isn't the first time America has wrestled with itself. I wrestle with it often these days.
I compare this country to a dysfunctional family. You love them, but they're far from perfect. Even the families that look pristine on the outside have issues under the hood.
Right now, loving this country feels complicated. At times, it even feels counterintuitive to the way I try to live my life—with compassion, kindness, and an open heart.
And yet, maybe that’s exactly why I keep wrestling with it.
Our history is beautifully imperfect, but freedom has always been the ideal that has drawn us forward.
The American Revolution — declaring that people could govern themselves rather than live under a monarchy.
The abolition of slavery — ending one of our nation's greatest moral failures.
Women's suffrage — expanding democracy by giving women the right to vote.
The Civil Rights Movement — continuing the fight to make equality a reality for all Americans.
It's often the messiness—the flaws—that have inspired Americans to stand up and fight for what they believed was right.
Today, our generation faces its own questions about who belongs, how we treat one another, and whether we'll continue expanding—or narrowing—the promise of America.
Maybe that's what loving a country is. Not believing it's flawless. Not giving up on it when it disappoints us. But continuing to believe it can become the very best version of itself.
That goes for ourselves as well.
We are perfectly imperfect. Magnificent and messy.
We're not the pristine, perfectly landscaped garden. We're the disorderly wildflowers with radiant colors, shapes, and heights.
America is home to breathtaking landscapes and an extraordinary diversity of people unlike anywhere I've experienced.
I haven't traveled the world, but within a mile of my home, there are both a Korean and a Mexican grocery store across from one another. In the other direction, there is a Lebanese bakery, an African Market, a Turkish Kabob restaurant, and an American diner in the same shopping center. On my block, I have neighbors from the Philippines, India, Jordan, Vietnam...and Texas.
Perhaps our next chapter won't be written by politicians alone, but by millions of ordinary people choosing curiosity over certainty, compassion over contempt, and conversation over conflict.
I am proud of that America. And it is that America I celebrate on this 250th anniversary.
Happy 250th, America.
With respect and gratitude
