Finding Balance in Your Day-and Your Life

My Morning Routine

My yoga teacher once said to me, "You're very good at being busy."

At the time, I wasn't quite sure what she meant. I thought I was simply doing what needed to be done—work, family, responsibilities, and all the things that fill our days.

But as I've gotten older, I understand exactly what she was talking about.

I've always been good at filling my calendar. Yet these days, I find myself craving something different. I crave quiet. I crave stillness. I crave moments when I don't have to accomplish anything.

I've also learned to recognize when I'm out of balance.

My mind starts filling with old fears, frustrations, and thoughts that I'm not doing enough.

That's when I know it's time to pause.

I like to ease into my day with a routine that nourishes my mind and body.

Most mornings begin with my favorite homemade "tea" followed by meditation and a healthy breakfast (pics and recipes below).

But balance isn't something we create only in the morning.

Throughout the day, when I feel tired, frustrated, or overwhelmed, I try to listen. I pay attention to my thoughts, my feelings, and my energy. Sometimes I sit outside. Sometimes I take a walk. Sometimes I simply take a break from doing.

The important thing is recognizing when we need that pause.

It's easy to get caught up in the busyness of being busy.

The same thing happens in our lives.

Earlier this year, I attended The Longevity Retreat hosted by my friend and the founder of the Center for Intuitive Food Therapy (among other things), Lainie Sevante Wulkan. It reminded me how powerful it can be to step away from our everyday environment and experience something new.

That retreat inspired me to take better care of myself. I'm cooking more, growing herbs and vegetables, and being more intentional about what I bring into my home and my body.

Most importantly, it reminded me that we all need something to look forward to.

That's one reason I'm so excited about our Sedona retreat this November (5-8) that I'm co-facilitating with another friend and mentor, Mary Gooden.

Whenever I mention Sedona, people either tell me how much they love it or how they've always wanted to go. I felt the same way. After visiting a few years ago with my daughter as her gift for my birthday, I knew I would return someday.

I also knew I wanted to share the experience with others.

Together we'll practice yoga, hike, reflect, share homemade meals for the soul, and explore what it means to live with greater awareness and S.E.L.F. Leadership—all surrounded by the beauty and magic of Sedona.

If Sedona has been calling your name, now might be the time to listen.

We currently have only four spots remaining, and through June 4, we're still offering our five-month payment plan. Beginning June 5, that option will be reduced to three payments.

But whether Sedona is right for you or not, my invitation is the same:

Find something to look forward to.

Create a new experience.

Give yourself permission to step away from the busyness now and then.

Listen to your body and mind. What does it need to find balance in the moment and in your life?

We're often so busy caring for others that we forget to care for ourselves. Yet we show up more fully for the people we love when we take time to nourish our own mind, body, and spirit.

The world is better with you in it.

Feed yourself what you need to find balance in your day—and your life.
