An Earthly Perspective on Letting Go

Earthly Love

Lately, I’ve been sitting with a thought—one that feels especially meaningful on Earth Day.

It’s a perspective that reminds me of how deeply connected we are to this planet, and how our individual lives are woven into a story that began over four billion years ago.

When the chaos of daily life feels overwhelming, this thought is an earthly perspective that brings me back to center and helps me let go. It invites wonder, humility, and the kind of awe that Earth Day is really about—recognizing that we are part of something so much greater than ourselves.

So, take a breath and come with me on this mind-expanding journey...

Start by noticing exactly where you are right now. Maybe you’re sitting on your couch, lying in bed, or standing in a long line at the grocery store. Wherever you are, just pause and imagine all the events that had to unfold for you to arrive at that precise spot, in this exact moment in time.

Now, pull the lens back… all the way back. Think four billion years ago, when the Earth first formed. The cosmic circumstances that made this planet not only exist, but made it just right for life. We're the perfect distance from the sun, so we don’t freeze or burn. The moon’s gravitational pull keeps the Earth steady. A massive collision tilted our planet’s axis and gave us seasons. Then life emerged—first as microscopic organisms, then sea creatures, then land animals, apes, and eventually, humans.

Civilizations rose, fell, and evolved. Entire lifetimes came and went. And yet here you are—sitting, breathing, reading this. The sheer number of things that had to go right for this moment to exist is staggering.

This concept is beautifully captured in the film Here, directed by Robert Zemeckis and starring Tom Hanks, Robin Wright, and Paul Bettany. The camera never moves—it stays fixed in one spot inside a living room. And while the view remains the same, time passes around it. From dinosaurs roaming through that space, to Native Americans, early settlers, and generations of modern families. Life shifts, transforms, repeats—yet the space holds it all. It’s a cinematic metaphor for how time leaves its mark, and how we are all just passing through.

That’s the kind of perspective that softens the sharp edges of my daily stress. It invites wonder, joy, and a deep breath of calm. It reminds me that change is constant. That we are part of something so vast and miraculous, it's almost unfathomable.

Every day, we make countless choices—some small, like brushing our teeth, others life-altering, like choosing to love, to leave, to forgive, or to begin again. Each choice becomes part of the chain of events that shapes our personal universe.

And yet, the truth is: we never really know what comes next. The future is a mystery. What is happening right now becomes the past the moment it passes. Just like that.

At the end of my yoga classes, I often guide students through a meditation in savasana, using this mantra:“Inhale... Exhale... Relax. Release. Let go. Surrender.”

It’s a gentle reminder that we can carry off the mat and into the world. Life is rich. Life is fleeting. Life is messy and magnificent, often all at once.

So—relax.

Release what isn’t serving you.

Let go of what you can’t control.

Surrender to the flow of time, the mystery of change, and the miracle of now.

Because ultimately, change is just a breath away.
