Do You Like You?

By Phyllis Smith; Yoga Instructor, Wellness Coach
I love the song by Colby Callait, "Try," is such a beautiful reminder of how important it is to love yourself first. No makeup, no curling iron, no blow dried hair, no hair extensions or fake eyelashes. Her lyrics tell us not to try so hard to get others to like you. YOU need to like yourself.
Once you can look yourself in the mirror and embrace the beauty of who you are, inside and out, you will begin to make choices that are good for you. You will treat yourself like a queen or a king, and feed your body only what's best for it. You will want to do what it takes to be a healthier you, because there is nothing or nobody more valuable than you. That is because there is only one of you.
And here's the thing... it won't feel like you're trying too hard. It will come naturally. It will be like brushing your teeth in the morning. It just becomes a state of being.
I was reminded recently in an article by master Yoga Teacher, Judith Hanson Lasater, about the 5 Yamas in Patanjali's Yoga Sutras. Yama is a Sansrkit word meaning restraint.
They are:
1. Do No Harm (non-violence)
2. Tell the truth
3. Don't take from others
4. Be mindful with our sexuality
5. Refrain from greed.
#1, Do No Harm, starts with ourselves and shows up in all the other Yamas. If all of us looked in the mirror and loved ourselves first, we would be kind to ourselves, kind to others and ultimately play a pivotal role in creating a kinder world.
Colby Callait asks us not to TRY so hard to please others. Instead, TRY first to please yourself. Look in the mirror at your one-of-a-kind beauty every day and treat yourself like you were the last person on earth. After all, you are the last of you're kind.
